Women's Soccer Breaks Out vs. Bryn Mawr, Wins 5-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team broke out offensively on Wednesday night en route to a 5-0 win against Bryn Mawr. The Fords (6-6-2, 2-5 CC) scored twice in the first half before completely dominating the second half of play against the visiting Owls (5-9-1, 1-6-1 CC). Tonight's breakout game offensively was the most goals the team has scored since a 6-0 win at home against Washington College on October 23, 2012.

Michelle Babicz scored two goals in the second half to lead the Haverford offense. Connie Friedman added her team-leading fifth goal of the season, while Kendall Logan recorded her second tally of the year. The game-winning goal came from Safiyah Riddle in the 30th minute. Riddle's goal made her the 11th different player to score a goal this season for the Fords.

Riddle wasted little time making her presence known when she took the field. Entering the game on a substitution right before Kristin Hasselgren was set to take a corner kick, Riddle's first touch of the game connected to put her team up 1-0. In the 43rd minute of the opening half, Friedman put her squad up 2-0 after she collected a rebound off the initial shot of Logan.

Babicz scored the first of her two goals on the night just under eight minutes into the second half. Her goal came as she set up near the far post and was able to knock home that finish after the set piece was put into play from Hasselgren. Hasselgren's two assists were her first of the season.

Haverford did well to crash the nets on a slick field and the Fords were rewarded with their second goal off a rebound in the 65th minute. After an initial shot from Anna Dekle was saved, Logan was there to collect the rebound and knock home her second goal of the season to finish the night with three points after her earlier assist.

The Fords did not allow Bryn Mawr a corner kick opportunity all night, while also earning seven on the offensive end. Haverford connected on two of its corners with the second goal off a corner coming in the 74th minute when Babicz scored off the insert from Skyler Ellenburg. Babicz's two goals marked the first multi-goal outing of her collegiate career and set a new career high in goals for the four-year defender.

As impressive as the three second half goals were, even they do not fully paint a picture of how dominant the Fords were during those final 45 minutes. During that time, Haverford took 15 shots and did not allow a shot attempt on Robin Chernow in the second half. Chernow finished the game with two saves to record her sixth shutout in 11 starts this season. She now has 33 career shutouts over her four seasons.

Haverford finished with a 23-4 advantage in shots for the game. Nine different players took a shot for Haverford in the game, while seven finished with multiple shot attempts. Friedman led all players with five shots, one more than the entire Bryn Mawr team.

Women's soccer will be back in action this weekend in the home finale against McDaniel. The contest will get underway at 1 p.m. and also serve as Senior Day for the eight members of the graduating senior class.
