Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw on Senior Day

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team threw everything it had at McDaniel in an effort to try and send the senior class away with a win on Senior Day. However, despite a 17-3 advantage in shots for Haverford, neither side was able to find the back of the net as the Fords (6-6-3, 2-5-1 CC) and Green Terror (8-4-4, 2-3-3 CC) were forced to settle for a tie in the scoreless draw.

Prior to the game, the Fords took a chance to recognize the eight members of the senior class (Larisa Antonisse, Michelle Babicz, Dominique Caggiano, Robin Chernow, Connie Friedman, Kristin Hasselgren, Phoebe Miller, and Abi Moeller). This senior class has helped the Fords to the 2012 Centennial Conference Championship and the first back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in program history during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

The shots came early and often for Haverford on Saturday as the Fords held an 8-1 edge in shots in the first half, putting three of those attempts on net. In addition to the attempts on goal, Jo Haller rattled the crossbar in the 23rd minute of play, while Safiyah Riddle watched her last ditch run at the end of the half result in a shot over the crossbar.

The pressure continued in the second half as the Fords owned a 7-1 edge in shots during the final 45 minutes of regulation. In that time frame, Haverford recorded the only four shots on goal of the half but still could not solve the Green Terror defense. The first overtime also proved fruitless for either team as the closest either side came was a corner kick from Haverford in the 98th minute.

A pair of seniors nearly played the role of hero in the second overtime frame but those final two attempts never reached their intended destinations. Babicz sent a shot just wide off a corner from Hasselgren in the 107th minute. The final chance for the Fords on the day came off the foot of Friedman with under a minute to play as she sent a shot over the crossbar in what turned out to be the final offensive chance for either team on the day.

McDaniel goalie Sarah McDonald recorded eight saves for her shutout. Chernow was called on just twice for the Fords, but stopped both of those attempts to record her seventh shutout of the season. Offensively, Miller led the Fords with four shots on the afternoon. Friedman added three shots, while Kendall Logan, Babicz and Haller each took two shots in the draw.

Women's soccer will now head out on the road for the final two matches of the season. On Wednesday, the Fords will head to Washington College for a newly scheduled 7 p.m. contest. The season concludes with a 3 p.m. game next Saturday at rival Swarthmore.
