Women's Soccer Sinks Washington, 1-0

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Haverford College women's soccer team used a goal in the 55th minute from Jo Haller to win on the road Wednesday evening against Washington College, 1-0. The Fords (7-6-3, 3-5-1 CC) dominated the tempo of the game with a 22-4 advantage in shots against the Shorewomen (3-10-3, 0-7-2 CC). On top of that statistic, Haverford held a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

The shots came early and often for Haverford as Tori D'Acunto threatened to score just 45 seconds into the game before ultimately watching her shot sail wide of the net. However, that offensive pressure was a sign of things to come for the Washington defense on the evening. Despite the relentless pressure, the Shorewomen's Melissa Barry stopped all seven shots on goal that she was faced with in the opening half. The Fords' offense tallied a total of 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes.

Just 21 seconds into the second half, Phoebe Miller broke though the Washington defense but again Barry was there for the save. Anna Dekle would also see her shot saved as well in the opening minutes of the second half, but the third shot on goal of the half would prove to be the charm and eventual game-winning goal for the Fords.

In the 55th minute of play, Haller became the 12th different player to score a goal for Haverford this season. Haller was able to find the open space in the defense with her dribble and eventually buried her shot in the lower right hand corner to put her team up 1-0 with the unassisted goal.

That one goal ultimately proved to be the difference as Robin Chernow faced just two shots on goal the entire night, making one save in each half. With her two saves, Chernow posted her eighth shutout of the season in 13 starts. Tonight's win was her sixth of the season.

Offensively, Skyler Ellenburg nearly doubled up Washington's shot total as she took seven shots just by herself. Ten different players in all recorded a shot for Haverford. Haller and Miller each took three shots on the night, while Connie Friedman and Dekle finished with a pair of shot attempts.

Women's soccer will close out the season this Saturday at Swarthmore. The final match of the regular season will be the fifth of six points up for grabs on Saturday in the Hood Trophy competition between the two schools. That game is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. A win on Saturday would guarantee Haverford its seventh winning season in eight years under head coach Jamie Schneck.
