Women's Soccer Bests Elizabethtown, 2-0, For First Win of 2016

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team wasted little time on Sunday as just 39 seconds into the game the Fords got an early 1-0 advantage thanks to a goal from Anna Dekle. The Fords (1-1) later added a second half goal from Ali Lopez in an eventual 2-0 win during the final game of the Haverford College Kick Off Classic.

Even with two goals to show for its work in the attacking third, Haverford was seemingly on the attack all afternoon and racked up a 20-2 advantage in total shots. The Fords put half of those attempts on goal but the efforts of Elizabethtown's Nicole Boyd, who finished with eight saves, denied any further damage. Kathy Prescott stopped the only shot she faced all afternoon to record her first shutout of the season. She now has five shutouts in her last 13 starts and two more combined shutouts during that span.

Haverford's first goal of the afternoon started with a run down the left sideline from Sydney West. West then played a cross into the box that was redirected by Maryanna Solecki to a waiting Dekle near the far post for the finish. Dekle's goal was the seventh of her career after she scored five times during her sophomore season. West and Solecki were credited with the second and third assists of their respective careers on the play.

The Fords looked to have several opportunities to add to the lead in the remaining 44-plus minutes, but five saves from the Elizabethtown keeper held the game to a single goal difference for the time being. The Blue Jays also had to successfully defend three Haverford corner kick attempts during the opening half.

Lopez also added the seventh goal of her career in this contest when she scored in the 68th minute of play. Like her fellow scoring teammate, Lopez also had five goals a season ago in what was her junior campaign. Lopez's goal came after she crashed hard on goal following a direct kick from Katie Safter. Safter's take was deflected off of the goalie to the waiting foot of Lopez from close range. Safter was credited with her first career assist on the goal.

Ten different players recorded a shot for Haverford in Sunday's victory. That group included six individuals who each had multiple attempts at goal. Hannah Krapes and Safter each took four shots on the afternoon. Krapes led the team with three of her shots being on goal.

Arcadia, the team Haverford was edged by a 1-0 score on Saturday, won the Kick Off Classic Championship with a 2-1 victory against Washington & Lee in the opening game on Sunday.

Women's soccer will return to Walton Field next Saturday when it hosts Lebanon Valley in a 1 p.m. start. The Fords will be at home a total of four straight matches before heading on the road for the Centennial Conference opener.
