Women's Soccer Edged by Swarthmore, 2-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team tied Swarthmore in the 57th minute of play on Saturday night with an unassisted free kick goal from Katie Safter. However, the Garnet found the game-winner just 15 minutes later to escape with a 2-1 victory.

Despite the loss, Haverford did not lose any ground in the Centennial Conference standings and will still host Gettysburg next Wednesday in the Centennial Conference first round game on Walton Field. The Bullets were topped by Johns Hopkins on Saturday and remained in fifth place.

Swarthmore held a 7-2 edge in shots during the opening half, but two saves from Kathy Prescott kept her side in the game. The only ball to get past the senior keeper during the first 45 minutes came when the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Garnet in the 19th minute of game action. Marin McCoy converted that chance for the home side to go up 1-0.

Opportunities were much more balanced in the second half and it took just over 10 minutes after the halftime break for Safter to level the score. Safter's goal, her second of the season, came on a direct kick from well outside of the 18 that went untouched into the back of the net.

Prescott was called on to make two more saves after Haverford found the equalizer, but the Garnet eventually scored on their final shot on goal of the half. Using quick passing, Sarah Hancock knocked home the game winner on assists from McCoy and Katie Dougherty to give her side the eventual game-winning goal.

Haverford did not relent in the final 20 minutes of game action, but the Garnet successfully defended a corner kick in the 75th minute, got the only save of the game from keeper Amy Shmoys, and watched a shot from Abby Letts sail wide of net with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

Women's soccer will be making its return to the postseason for the first time since the 2013 season when the team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Game time for the Fords and Bullets match up on Wednesday will be announced this coming Monday.
