HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2017 season on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over York (Pa.) College. Playing in the Haverford College Kick Off Classic consolation game, the Fords (1-1) turned yesterday's score in their favor with a pair of first half goals that provided all the offense they would need in the win over the Spartans (0-2).

For the second straight game, first year Saede Eifrig scored while junior Katie Safter later provided the second and eventual game-winning goal during the 26th minute of play. Controlling the tempo throughout the afternoon, Haverford racked up a 17-4 advantage in shots. The Fords held a 10-3 edge in shots after 45 minutes of play. They added seven more shots in the second half, conceding just one shot attempt and one corner kick during that time. Julie Hanss picked up her first career victory in goal for the Fords after making one save on the afternoon in front of a stout defense.

Haverford wasted little time getting on the board Sunday as Eifrig collected the possession for the Fords about 30 yards out from goal and ripped a shot past the keeper for her second tally in as many games. Haverford's first goal of the game came during the eighth minute of play and just its second shot of the afternoon.

The Fords gradually increased the pressure against the Spartan defense with a total of eight shots in just over 25 minutes of game action. That relentless attack found its second opening in the 26th minute when Haverford had its first chance at a corner kick. With Sydney West putting the ball into play, Safter headed home that ball for a 2-0 advantage just 25:20 into the game. Safter's goal was the sixth of her career while West was credited with her fifth career assist on the play.

York (Pa.) got on the scoreboard in the 61st minute of play when Caitlin Rankin collected a rebound inside the 18 and finished that attempt. However, the Spartans were denied the rest of the afternoon by a very stingy Haverford defense that held its ground for the final 30 minutes of regulation.

Anna Dekle finished with a team-high five shots to lead Haverford in that category. She put four of her attempts on goal as Jess Wieber made six saves on the afternoon for the visitors. Hannah Krapes added four shot attempts to the Haverford offense. Safter finished with two shots, scoring on her only attempt on goal, while Eifrig tallied on her lone shot of the day.

Women's soccer will now prepare for its first road contest of the season as the Fords head to Lebanon Valley next Saturday. That game is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. In what has been a historically tight game, the Fords and Dutchmen have played three overtime contests and six one-goal games in their meetings over the previous eight years.
