Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw at Lebanon Valley

Sydney West

ANVILLE, Pa. – Saturday afternoon proved to be another classic showdown between the Haverford College women's soccer team and Lebanon Valley. The Fords (1-1-1) more than doubled up the Dutchmen (2-0-1) in offensive chances with a 14-6 edge in shots. However, five saves from LVC's Emma Strickler denied Haverford's attempts. Julie Hanss made three saves of her own to preserve the clean sheet for Haverford with her first career shutout.

With these two sides meeting each season since 2009, all but two of those nine contests have been either a draw or one-goal difference. Saturday's tie marked the second draw in series history (2011) and the fourth overtime contest between the two schools.

Haverford was consistent all day with five shots during the opening half, six shots in the second half, and the final three attempts coming during the second overtime period. Raina Fitzpatrick had four of those attempts, while Sydney West and Katie Safter also had multiple shot attempts over the 110 minutes of playing time. West finished with two of the Fords' five shots on goal.

A goal scorer in each of the first two games, Saede Eifrig had Haverford's first shot on goal in the 25th minute while Fitzpatrick's shot on goal came during the 35th minute of play. Those were the only shots on goal of the opening half until Hanss was called on to stop a shot during the 41st minute of game action.

With her defense not letting anything through for a vast majority of the afternoon, Hanss was called upon to make key back-to-back saves as she stopped a pair of Lebanon Valley shots within a matter of seconds during the 55th minute of play. However, those would be the final shots to get through the Haverford backline for the remainder of play. Kelly Brown and West also had shots on goal in the second half with their attempts at the game's first goal coming in the 64th and 72nd minute.

Neither side was able get anything done offensively in the first overtime period. The Fords cranked up the offensive pressure again for the second 10 minute overtime. Nevertheless, a shot wide of goal from West, an attempt from Fitzpatrick that was blocked down, and final save from Strickler off the foot of West ensured the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Women's soccer will be back on the road to start next week with a quicker than usual turnaround as the team travels to Eastern on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. start in St. Davids. Haverford was a 2-0 winner against the Eagles last season with Hannah Krapes and Leanne Ludwick tallying the two goals during that victory.
