Women's squash begins play at Pioneer Valley Invite

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - The Haverford College women's squash team opened play Friday at the 2014 Pioneer Valley Invitational with an 8-1 loss to No. 26 Connecticut College at the Mount Holyoke College Field House Squash Courts.

The Fords' first match of the weekend-long tournament saw the 32nd-ranked Fords (1-4) give the Camels (4-7) a battle.

Sophomore Emily Berlin, playing in the No. 8 spot on the ladder, earned Haverford's lone point of the day with a 3-0 victory over Charlotte Novak. Berlin won the first game, 11-6, and then had to work overtime in the next two games (13-11, 15-13) on her way to the hard-fought victory.

Junior Samara Flug and sophomore Alyssa Kaden, at No. 5 and No. 7, respectively, each dug deep to claim wins in their respective third games before falling 3-1.

Playing in her first match of the season, junior Alex Love had a strong showing at No. 2. Love dropped the first two games by identical 11-8 scores but did not go down without a fight as she pushed Leah Puklin to extra points in the third game (13-11).

Haverford gets right back into action tomorrow when it takes on host Mount Holyoke at 9 a.m. before squaring off against Northeastern University at 11 a.m.
