Women's Squash Drops Season-Opener vs. Johns Hopkins, 6-3

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Haverford College women's squash team lost its season-opening match to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 6-3 on the campus of the United States Naval Academy on Saturday afternoon.

Three Fords scored victories in sophomore Isabelle Gotuaco, junior Atalanta Henderson and senior Ava Lichauco. Gotuaco registered a sweep at the No. 1 position over Gabby Nyirjesy (11-4, 14-12, 11-8). Lichauco nabbed an 11-4 win to start her match and secured a close 12-10 victory to take a 2-0 lead. After dropping an 11-3 decision, the senior regained focus to win 11-9 in game four. It was Lichauco's first career triumph. Henderson saw herself behind, 2-1, before rallying with tight 11-8, 11-9 victories to record her first career win in five games.

Senior Bethany Simmonds jumped ahead, 2-0 behind two stingy 11-9 wins, but Keely Herrina came back with three straight wins (11-8, 11-5, 11-8) to take the point for Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays picked up victories in the first five matches to clinch the victory over Haverford.

Sophomores Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow, Emilia Cobbs and senior Sabina Aliev each won a game in their matches. Freshman Olivia Franco collected a 2-0 win over Jane Nester in an exhibition match.

Haverford's match vs. Fordham was cancelled. Both Haverford squash teams welcome Dickinson (10:30 a.m.) and Vassar (3:30 p.m.) to the GIAC Squash Courts next Saturday.
