Gotuaco to Represent the Philippines in Southeast Asian Games

Philippine Star: "Squash a mother lode in SEA Games"

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior captain Isabelle Gotuaco of the Haverford College women's squash team will represent the Philippines in the 29th Southeast Asian Games, which begin on Saturday, August 19 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Southeast Asian Games, held biennially, will be contested from August 19 to August 31. The multi-sport event is supervised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The games feature competitors from all eleven countries of Southeast Asia including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.

At the 2017 games, squash competition will start on Monday, August 21 and run until Tuesday, August 29. Over that time period, Gotuaco and the Philippines squad will compete in singles, doubles, mixed doubles, jumbo doubles and a team-based event. For the first time in the history of the SEA games, nine total squash events will be held.

At the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, the Philippines team collected five bronze medals across women's singles, men's jumbo doubles and the men's team event.

The theme of the 2017 SEA Games is Rising Together, which was chosen to highlight unity between the nations of Southeast Asia and signify the coming of age for Southeast Asia as an international community. The games aim to celebrate the achievements of the athletes while maintaining a commitment towards sportsmanship while simultaneously uplifting the region. 

In total, the games will feature 404 events in 38 sports raining alphabetically from archery to wushu.
