Women's Squash Drops CSA Team Championships Opener to Connecticut College

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 30 Haverford College women's squash team was defeated in its College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships quarterfinal matchup on Friday afternoon. Haverford dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 27 Connecticut College at the Murr Center on the campus of Harvard as quarterfinal action got underway in the "D" Division Epps Cup.  Haverford is now 7-9 on the season while Connecticut is 9-11 after the first day of action at the team championships. 

The Fords received wins at the first three flights, with Kaitlin Reese finishing the match at the top flight with a win over Margaret Davey (12-10, 11-9, 11-5). Maddie Hager took a four-game win over Molly Carabastos at the second flight (11-6, 9-11, 11-3, 12-10) and Isabelle Gotuaco defeated Elizabeth Varoli for her 36th career victory at the third flight (11-8, 11-9, 11-6). Gotuaco can tie the Haverford program career wins record of 38 set by Rachel Kaplan '99 with victories in the remaining two contests this weekend.

Denise Bonilla defeated Sunyoung Chai at the fourth spot on the ladder (11-5, 11-8, 11-8) and Davis Lemay downed Tia Brown in four games (11-8, 7-11, 11-3, 11-5) at the fifth flight. Allie Fuller got past Olivia Franco at the sixth position (11-8, 11-5, 11-2) and Jacqueline Chu took down Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow at the seventh flight (11-4, 11-8, 11-4).

Phoebe Pilakas-Smith posted a victory over Sophia Jackson at the eighth position (11-3, 11-8, 11-6) and Noelle Giuliano got the best of Belen Madariaga at the ninth spot on the ladder (11-2, 11-0, 11-1).  

Haverford returns to action in the consolation semifinals against No. 31 California on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at Harvard. The Fords and Golden Bears will be facing off for the first time since an Epps Cup first round matchup in 2011.
