Women's Squash Adds Pair of Senior Day Victories

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The No. 27 ranked Haverford Women's Squash team (8-3), completed a 9-0 sweep of No. 47 Denison, before returning in the afternoon to take a 6-3 victory over No. 30 Bucknell, registering a pair of wins on Senior Day at the GIAC Squash Courts. Prior to the morning match with Denison, Haverford honored its lone senior, Stephanie Lukez. Lukez has amassed a 5-1 individual record so far this season.

The Fords were able to storm past the Big Red of Denison, as the Fords posted wins in each of the 27 individual games on the morning. 

In the first match to finish, Sunny Chai allowed just six total points in her sweep of Sarah Spire at the sixth flight (11-2, 11-1, 11-4). The second match to conclude featured Isabelle Johnson breezing past Catherine Oxholm at the second flight (11-3, 11-1, 11-2). The third match to reach its finish saw Eva Tamkin allow just two points to Lydia Hewett at the ninth flight (11-2, 11-0, 11-0).

In the second round of matches to hit the courts, Urgyen Wangmo defeated Lily Pigott, allowing just four total points at the fifth flight (11-1, 11-3, 11-0). Hannah Adler then allowed just six points to Jessie Niu at the eighth position (11-2, 11-1, 11-3). Maddie Hager surrendered just five total points to Katie Lotane at the fourth flight 11-2, 11-2, 11-1). The third round of matches featured even more Haverford dominance, with Sophia Jackson allowing just five points (11-0, 11-2, 11-3) to Gloria Appiah at the seventh flight.

At the top flight, Kaitlin Reese surrendered just four total points to Ellie Blue (11-2, 11-1, 11-1). In the final match to finish, Shreya Singh swept past Zoe Pearce at the third flight (11-4, 11-5, 11-4).

Haverford is now 4-0 all-time against Denison. The two squads met earlier this season at the Vassar Round Robin on December 1.

No. 27 Haverford 6, No. 30 Bucknell 3

In the first match to finish against the Bison, Haverford senior Stephanie Lukez posted a win over Emma Jinno (11-4, 11-2, 13-11) at the ninth flight. The Fords would continue the winning ways with Johnson grabbing a win over Maeve Snover at the second flight with a convincing sweep (11-3, 11-8, 11-3). Jackson then gave Haverford a 3-0 lead with a thrilling five-game match with Molly Horning at the sixth flight. Jackson grabbed the first game with relative ease in an 11-5 win, but Horning took the next two games to pull to the brink of an individual win. Jackson had other plans, taking 11-2, and 11-6 wins to outlast her opponent.

Emma Stone got a match win back for Bucknell, getting the best Tamkin at the eighth position (11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7), but Chai gave Haverford its fourth win over Liesel Ferguson at the fifth flight (11-9, 11-3, 11-5).

Harriet Jones won for Bucknell over Adler at the seventh flight (12-10, 11-6, 12-10), but the Fords clinched the match with a sweep from Reese at the top flight. Reese prevailed over Kelly Clark (11-7, 11-3, 11-5) to seal the afternoon victory for the Fords. In just her junior season, Reese has reached 30 wins, and is already just eight wins off the Haverford program record of 38.

Hager won in four over Caroline Fakharzadeh at the fourth flight (11-5, 11-13, 11-3, 11-5), before Anna Hart gave Bucknell its third individual win, as the Bison player took down Shreya Singh in a spirited five game battle (11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 12-14, 11-8).

Haverford has now won two straight matches against Bucknell and owns a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series, dating back to the 2013 campaign.

The Fords will now return to action on Saturday, February 9 as the team makes the trip to Lancaster, Pa. to face off with No. 20 Franklin & Marshall. The match is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by the Fords taking on either No. 18 Dickinson or No. 45 Johns Hopkins at 6 p.m.
