Fords upend Washington to reach double figures in wins for 3rd straight season

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team reached double figures in wins for the third consecutive campaign with a 6-3 victory over visiting Washington College on Wednesday evening in Centennial Conference action at Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts.

The Fords (10-4, 6-2 CC) moved out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Rachal Torg and Kate Donches, playing at third doubles, provided Haverford's first point of the day with an 8-3 victory over Kat Cohen and Amy Stevens.

Caitlin Gallagher and Alex Ferrara, the ninth-ranked doubles team in the Atlantic South, captured their 10th doubles win of 2013 by rolling past Marielle McIntyre and Campbell McNicol, 8-2.

Haverford capped its sixth conference victory of the season with four straight-set wins during singles play. Kate Donches, at No. 6, led the effort as she blanked Stevens (6-0, 6-0).

Keeping her perfect singles record intact, Gallagher, the 14th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South, rallied from an early deficit against April Weaver, at No. 1, to win her 14th consecutive match. Trailing 4-0, Gallagher dug deep and won the next seven games before Weaver retired due to injury.

Ferrara, at No. 2, and Robyn Himelstein, at No. 3, accounted for the Fords' final points of the match against the Shorewomen (5-9, 3-5).

Haverford steps out of the conference for the final time on Sunday when it travels to Salisbury University for a 1 p.m. match against the Sea Gulls. Salisbury is currently ranked seventh in the Atlantic South.
