Fords turn back Dickinson, 5-4

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team edged visiting Dickinson College, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action at the Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts.

The victory snaps the Fords' two-match losing streak to the Red Devils (6-6, 5-2 CC) and moves Haverford (9-3, 5-2) into a tie with Dickinson for fourth place in the conference standings.

Leading 2-1 after doubles, Haverford claimed its sixth win in the last seven outings with a strong effort at singles. Senior Alex Ferrara, at No. 2, extended her win streak to eight with a straight-set victory over Sydney Diamond (6-0, 6-2). Classmate Kate Donches followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Madison Parks at No. 6.

Needing one more point to clinch the match, freshman Abby Payson, playing at No. 5, swept past Joana Nunes (6-2, 6-4).

Caitlin Gallagher and Robyn Himelstein, at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, came close to adding to the Fords' point total but each lost in third-set tiebreakers.

Earlier in the match, Gallagher and Ferrara recorded an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles while Himelstein and Donches delivered an 8-4 win at No. 2.

Haverford, currently ranked 10th in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, faces Washington College on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the first of two straight road matches.
