Women's Tennis Topples Bryn Mawr, 8-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team returned to its winning ways on Wednesday evening with an 8-1 victory against visiting Bryn Mawr. The Fords (8-2, 1-1 CC) claimed all three doubles points and five of the six singles matches in their win over the Owls (0-2, 0-1 CC).

Haverford asserted itself early in the match with a strong performance in doubles. The Fords' top pairing of Caitlin Gallagher and Robyn Himelstein did not allow their counterparts a game in a convincing 8-0 win. Haverford's top pair improved to 6-4 at No. 1 doubles together this spring with its latest victory.

The middle doubles pairing was a new combination for the Fords as Alyssa Lavin and Abby Payson teamed up for the win at No. 2. Playing in their first match together this spring, Lavin and Payson were 8-2 winners. In the finals doubles match, Abigail Healy and Caroline Steliotes teamed up for their second win of the spring at No. 3. Their win came via an 8-3 final.

Himelstein and Payson were two the Fords' four players that helped the team earn points in both singles and doubles play. Those two singles victories clinched the match for Haverford. Playing at No. 3, Payson allowed just two games total in a 6-1, 6-1 straight set win in just her second match at that position this spring. Himelstein also moved up one spot to No. 2 for this match. She notched a 6-3, 6-2 win to clinch the fifth point for the Fords.

Gallagher also added a point in singles and doubles with her 6-2, 6-4 win at the top singles slot. Gallagher's win on Wednesday night was the 50th of her career. She becomes the ninth player in program history to reach the 50-win plateau in singles. Alex Ferrara '14 was the most recent Haverford player to reach that milestone as she finished her career with 58 victories.

Haverford also got wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Jia-Ling Tuan made her collegiate debut at No. 5 singles for the hosts. The Fords' freshman notched a 6-3, 6-2 win in her first match. Steliotes was the final player to earn points in both singles and doubles. She won an eight-game pro set with the team score already decided, an 8-2 victory at No. 6. The Owls got their only team point in a hard-fought No. 4 singles match. Lavin dropped the opening set, 6-2, but turned that score on her opponent in the second set. However, she fell to Alex Acaba by a 10-8 score in the 10-point tiebreak.

Women's tennis will be back at home Saturday for an 11 a.m. match against McDaniel.
