SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team got its fall season underway over the weekend at the Swarthmore Invitational. The Fords won four matches in singles and two more in doubles to highlight the first competition of the fall. In addition to the host Garnet, La Salle and Vassar also competed in the four-team event.

Captains Jessica Liu and Abby Payson both recorded victories to begin the season. On the other end of the spectrum, freshmen Ali Morrow and Emily Shutman also recorded the first singles victories of their careers. Liu won her final match of the weekend in a thrilling match over La Salle's Maansi Malhotra in a 10-6 tiebreak. Payson also won her match in a 10-point tiebreak as she won 11-9 in extra games against La Salle's Ally Santerelli.

Morrow notched her first career win in convincing fashion as she conceded just one game during a straight set victory against Vassar's Vista Grinde. Shutman started off her career with a 10-point tiebreak victory as she took down La Salle's Tiffany Theopil by a 10-8 score in the tiebreakers.

Morrow also found success in doubles as she teamed up with classmate Clara Farrehi for a convincing 8-1 win in the first round of doubles. Also victorious was the freshman/senior pairing of Julia Gan and Robin Stopa. That pairing won its only match together by doubling up on their opponents from La Salle.

Women's tennis will be back in action at the ITA Regional in Fredericksburg, Virginia. That tournament will get underway on Saturday, Sept. 24 and continue through Monday for advancing participants.
