SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team opened its spring dual season with a staunch test against No. 30 New York University. Although unable to come away with a victory, the Fords showed great fight throughout the lineup.

Haverford had its strongest showing of doubles in the second position as Greta Koch and Jia-Ling Tuan were just edged out by an 8-6 score. The nationally-ranked Violets took the first and third doubles matches by identical 8-3 scores.

Both Koch and Jane Bary took their Violet opponents to extra games during singles. Playing No. 2 singles after her close call in doubles, Koch was knotted at five-all in the opening set before her opponents held serve and broke Koch's service in the eventual 7-5 first set victory.

Bary, playing No. 4 singles, played a back-and-forth second set with her opponent that was also tied at five-all before the Violets rallied for an eventual 7-5 win in that set. Although unable to force extra games in either set, freshman Clara Farrehi won six games over her two sets at the No. 6 singles position.

After a strong test to start the season, women's tennis will now get set for its trip to Florida over Spring Break. While in the Sunshine State, Haverford will play four matches. Up first will be a 2 p.m. start with Alvernia University on Sunday, March 5 in Orlando, Florida.
