FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Haverford College women's tennis team opened up play at the ITA Southeast Regional Saturday on the campus of Mary Washington. After day one of the tournament, Jia-Ling Tuan is still alive in the Blue 4 Singles draw with two wins on Saturday. The Fords also sent Julia Gan to the Round of 32 in the Championship Singles draw and saw the pairing of Greta Koch and Emily Shutman advance to the Round of 16 in Championship Doubles.
Tuan allowed a total of just seven games over her two matches en route to a Sunday morning appearance in the semifinal round of Blue 4 Singles. Tuan toppled Shenandoah's Madison Hansen by a 6-1, 6-2 score. She followed that up with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the quarterfinals against Averett's Hannah Mattson. She will play Salisbury's Ariana Leggio Sunday at 1:30 for a spot in that draw championship later that evening.
Rory Lewis and Clara Farrehi also made the quarterfinal round of their respective Blue draws. Lewis opened up Blue 1 Singles with consecutive 6-2 sets against Catholic's Jenna Gietl. Farrehi contested Blue 3 singles and was a 6-1, 6-0 winner before she too fell in the quarterfinal round.
In Championship singles, Gan blanked Centennial Conference rival Sabrina Adams of Johns Hopkins before she dropped a hard-fought match in the Round of 32. Jane Bary, Greta Koch, and Emily Shutman fell in the Round of 64 and will each have consolation draws tomorrow morning.
The pairing of Koch and Shutman was successful in doubles with a hard-fought 8-6 win over Ursinus in the Round of 32. However, their advancement through the championship doubles was halted by the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The pairing of Bary and Gan also competed in championship doubles, falling by an 8-5 score. They will be back for consolation draws on Sunday morning. In addition to their singles success, Farrehi and Lewis won a 9-8 tiebreak to start Blue 1 doubles together before being upended in the quarterfinals.
