HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team faced off with No. 33 New York University on Saturday inside the Alumni Field House. Although the Fords were only able to come up with one victory, they showed incredible fight and had bright spots in seemingly every match up and down the lineup.

The Fords' victory came at No. 1 doubles where last year's standout pairing of Emily Shutman and Jane Bary doubled up the Violets' No. 1 doubles team by an 8-4 score. Moving up a spot from the usual position last season, that duo is now 2-0 in its only career matches together at No. 1 doubles. Shutman and Bary have compiled a 10-4 record overall together.

Despite dropping the No. 1 doubles match, the nationally-ranked Violets ended up with a 2-1 advantage after doubles with an 8-2 victory in the second position and an 8-3 triumph in the third doubles match.

Shutman nearly came away a winner in both singles and doubles as she took her No. 3 singles match into a decisive third set, before falling 6-3. That final set score turned the tables on her opening set victory. Sam Berg was also victorious by a 6-3 score in her opening singles set. With the team score decided, Berg played a 10-point tiebreak after dropping her second set. However, her opponent came away with a 10-5 victory at No. 5 singles.

Greta Koch (No. 2), Clara Farrehi (No. 4), and Jia-Ling Tuan (No. 6) each played tightly-contested 6-4 sets during their singles matches. However, all of those hard-fought sets ended up falling to the visiting Violets. In her quest for a second win on the day, Bary won five games against her nationally-ranked opponent during her debut at No. 1 singles for the Fords.

Women's tennis will back at home next Saturday against Salisbury. That match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start. That contest will also be the team's final competition before it heads to Orlando, Florida the following week during the College's spring break.
