ORLANDO, Fla. – The Haverford College women's tennis team won five of its six singles matches against Schreiner to rally from an early doubles deficit and starts its Spring Break trip off with a 6-3 victory. Haverford trailed 2-1 after doubles, but recorded four straight-set singles victories and another in a 10-point tiebreak to complete the comeback.
The Fords' victory in doubles came from the No. 2 pairing of Greta Koch and Julia Gan. That duo is now 2-0 in their only matches paired together. Koch and Gan salvaged one of the doubles points via an 8-6 score in the middle of the lineup. Schreiner grabbed the early team advantage with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles.
Haverford's top of the lineup put the Fords back in front on the strength of two quick straight-set wins. Julia Gan got the momentum rolling in Haverford's favor as she did not allow a game to her opponent at the top of the lineup. Gan has now won two of her first three matches to start the spring season. She picked up her first win at No. 1 on Tuesday. Jane Bary followed that victory up by conceding just one second set game to her opponent at No. 2 singles. She has won two straight matches in the No. 2 position.
Emily Shutman (No. 4) and Sam Berg (No. 6) were also straight-set winners to help the Fords clinch the team victory. Shutman won by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Berg reversed those advantages for a 6-2, 6-3 victory in her favor. Both Shutman and Berg have now won two straight matches and are unbeaten in their current positions in the lineup.
The teams split a pair of 10-point tiebreaks to close the match as Haverford came away with a 6-3 team win. Greta Koch got the early jump on her opponent at No. 3 singles with a 6-3 victory in the first. However, her opponent won a second set tiebreak and came through with extra points in the tiebreak to pull out the hard-fought victory. Clara Farrehi capped the day on a positive note for the Fords. After dropping a first set tiebreak, she rallied to force a 10-point tiebreak with a 6-4 second set win. Farrehi recorded her second victory of the spring by winning 10 of the 13 points in that final tiebreak.
Women's tennis is scheduled to play its three matches during Spring Break on three straight days. The Fords will return to the courts tomorrow at 7 p.m. for a match under the lights against Wisconsin-La Crosse.
