Women's Tennis All-Centennial Conference Release
HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's tennis team had four different players combine for six All-Centennial Conference honors as announced by conference officials. Julia Gan and Jane Bary were both named first-team All-Centennial Conference performers in singles, while Greta Koch (second team) and Emily Shutman (honorable mention) were also honored for their singles play. The doubles pairing of Shutman and Bary received second-team All-CC recognition, as Bary was additionally announced as the team's all-sportsmanship representative.
Playing No. 1 singles for the Fords, Julia Gan went 10-8 in singles this season (3-3 CC). The 21st ranked player in the ITA Atlantic South Region secured three different 6-0, 6-0 victories during the spring season, with such wins coming against Gettysburg and Muhlenberg. Gan was also victorious against Swarthmore's top player in both the regular season and postseason meetings.
Jane Bary won 13 straight matches to close her spring season, playing primarily at No. 2 singles. The junior went a perfect 8-0 during the regular season against Centennial Conference competition and won her singles match during the conference semifinals. She also was two points away from victory against Muhlenberg before that match reached decision. Each of Bary's wins during the spring season came in straight sets with the exception of her 10-point tiebreak for Haverford's only team point against Johns Hopkins during the regular season meeting.
A second-team All-CC selection this spring, Greta Koch was named an all-conference performer for the second time during her career as she was an honorable mention pick following the 2015 season. Filling the No. 3 spot in the singles lineup, Koch was 11-7 overall this spring, sporting a 6-2 record against conference opponents. Each of her victories during the Centennial Conference season came in straight sets with the exception of a three-set win against Washington College and a 10-point tiebreak victory against Franklin & Marshall.
Emily Shutman earned All-Centennial Conference accolades for the first time in her career with an honorable mention selection. Shutman held the No. 4 spot in the singles lineup and tied for the team lead with 13 wins. The Fords' sophomore was 8-1 against Centennial Conference foes during the regular season. Each of those conference victories during the regular season came in straight sets, including three matches in which she did not drop a game.
Jane Bary and Emily Shutman additionally earned second-team All-Centennial Conference recognition as a doubles pairing with a 10-7 record together. That duo played the top doubles match for the vast majority of the regular season, going 6-4 in Centennial matches. They had won four straight matches together, including a hard-fought win in the Centennial Conference semifinals before a tough setback during the conference championship.
Women's tennis finished its spring season with a 13-4 overall record, going 8-2 against Centennial Conference opponents during the regular season. Haverford reversed one of those conference defeats with a resounding 5-1 win against Swarthmore during the Centennial Conference semifinals. That win gave the Fords just their second appearance in the Centennial Conference Championship all-time before they fell to top-seeded Johns Hopkins. Haverford is currently ranked 11th as a team with the final ITA Atlantic South Regional rankings to be released at the end of this month.
