Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Release
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Julia Gan and Jane Bary have both been voted to the 2017-18 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area women's tennis team. The all-area team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 29 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
In order to be eligible for academic all-area honors, an athlete must be in at least his or her second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better. Haverford was one of just two schools (Drexel) that had multiple individuals among the six honorees on the academic all-area team.
Playing No. 1 singles, Julia Gan earned first-team All-Centennial Conference accolades and concluded her sophomore season as the No. 21 ranked player in the ITA's Atlantic South Region. Gan went 10-8 at No. 1 singles this season and added nine more victories to the Fords in doubles. Her season was highlighted by victories at No. 1 singles and doubles in the Fords' historic victory over Swarthmore during the Centennial Conference Tournament.
Jane Bary also earned first-team All-Centennial Conference recognition in singles and was additionally a second-team All-CC performer in doubles. Bary won 13 straight singles matches during the regular season, going a perfect 8-0 against Centennial Conference competition as she played primarily in the second position of the singles lineup. Bary also played No. 1 doubles alongside Emily Shutman for the majority of the spring season and finished with a 10-8 overall record that saw the duo regionally-ranked during the regular season.
Women's tennis posted a 13-4 team record, sporting an 8-2 mark against Centennial Conference competition. The Fords reversed one of those conference defeats in the postseason with a 5-1 victory over Swarthmore that gave the team just its second appearance in the Centennial Conference Championship match in program history. Haverford attained its first national ranking in program history during the final team release of the year as the Fords tied for 40th in the ITA Poll.
