FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Clara Farrehi and Claire Johnson both advanced to the finals of their respective flight draws on Sunday at the 2019 ITA Southeast Regional Championships to highlight Sunday's results for the Haverford College women's tennis team. However, both players were denied in hard-fought 10-point tiebreak matches in what was an overall successful weekend for the team. Haverford finished its regional championship with a team record of 15 wins and 13 defeats.

After pulling out a thrilling 10-point tiebreak victory in the quarterfinals on Saturday night, Farrehi allowed just three games total to her opponent during a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dangney Markle of Wilkes. Playing her second tiebreaker in as many days, Farrehi was unable to replicate her results from the quarterfinal round, falling 10-7 in that tiebreak. She was up a set early after turning a five-all match into a 7-5 first set victory in her favor during "D" singles action.

Claire Johnson also advanced to the finals of the "E" draw as she easily dispatched Esha Kashmiri of Stevenson during her semifinal with a 6-0, 6-1 victory. After falling down a set in her championship match, Johnson came right back with a 6-2 win to even the match during the second set. However, Wilkes' Alexa Cieri was able to rebound and claimed the 10-point tiebreak by a 10-6 margin.

During the singles consolation matches, Emily Shutman was able to bounce back from her defeat against the No. 9 seed on Saturday and closed her tournament with back-to-back victories in championship singles. Shutman won a hard-fought 8-6 battle against Washington & Lee's Claire Lacksen in the opening round before being credited with a walkover victory against Hayley Bidwell of Franklin & Marshall. Also facing off against a Centennial Conference foe on Sunday was Isa Cossio who fell to Johns Hopkins' Emily Javedan in the consolation rounds of championship singles.

Starting off the day in doubles, Sarah Evenson and Ananya Prakash matched up with Alexa Cieri and Laura Zielinski of Wilkes, falling by a hard-fought 8-6 score during the semifinal round. Haverford's championship doubles pairing of Lisette Pham and Anne Tobin dropped an 8-2 consolation round match to Washington & Lee.

Women's tennis will wrap up the fall season this coming Saturday with its annual Alumni Match. That event will get underway at 12 p.m. noon on the Bettye Marshall Tennis Courts. The Fords will play the bulk of their schedule during the spring season as they are slated to open dual match play on Sunday, February 16 at The College of New Jersey.
