Championship preview: Women's indoor track & field

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford College hosts the 2014 Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend and the Haverford women look to give the home fans at the Gary Lutnick Tennis & Track Center in Alumni Field House lots of reasons to cheer.

The Fords finished in a tie for second at last season's indoor championships and they will aim for another strong showing with contributions from up and down the roster.

Sophomore Nora Weathers enters the meet as one of the top seeds in the mile and 800 meter run. Senior Emily Scott gives Haverford another scoring threat in the mile while classmate Erin Seglem will look to get her team some points in the 400.

The Fords will hope to add some more points in the distance events with senior Flora Berklein, junior Charlotte Lellman and sophomore Molly Allen competing in the 3,000. Berklein will also have a chance to score in the 5,000 as she joins junior Margaret Duffy and seniors Chelsea Thorsheim and Nora Howe in the field of 30-plus runners.

Brittany Steele will aim to make an impression at her first conference meet as the freshman enters the weekend as one of the top seeds in the 60-meter dash and 200.

Haverford will turn to juniors Kimberly Haughton and Carolyn Oehrig in hopes of scoring points off the track. Haughton looks to score in the long jump while Oehrig will be busy as she participates in the long and triple jumps.

The Fords will need strong performances out of their relay squads. Haverford's 4x800 quartet registered the top time (9:39.98) in the Centennial this season.

Track & field action inside Alumni Field House begins at noon on Saturday. The opening day of the championship meet will run through 6 p.m. and then pick back up again on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

The busy weekend will culminate with awards ceremony scheduled to begin a little after 6 p.m. on Sunday.
