Women's Track & Field Wins Two Events at Holiday Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's indoor track & field team hosted its Haverford Holiday Invitational on Saturday. The event was the team's final competition before the winter break. The Fords had numerous top five finishes throughout the meet, highlighted by Claire Sargent's second straight victory in the shot put and Taylor Murphy winning the 60 meter hurdles.

In her season debut, Murphy finished just four-hundredths of a second off of her personal best as she placed first with a time of 9.30 seconds. First year Kat Turner was fourth in that same event with a time of 10.15 seconds which nearly cracked the College's top 10 list in her first meet. Murphy also placed second in the 200 meters with a time of 27.51 seconds. Marisa Antinori (28.74 seconds) and Kerry Quigley (29.13 seconds) were sixth and eighth, respectively, in that event.

Antinori also added a third place finish in the 60 meters to her day with a time of 8.48 seconds. Teammate Sophia Nelson was right behind her in fourth with a time of 8.55 seconds. Antinori, Murphy, Nelson, and Quigley also teamed up for a second place 4x200 relay which finished in a time of 1:52.26.

Sargent's win in the shot put came just one week after she tied the school's indoor record. The senior captain earned her second event title in as many meets with a throw of 12.10 meters on Saturday. Mari Horton (9.39m), Emily Anderson (8.67m), and Karen Mondaca (6.07m) finished sixth, eighth, and 10th in the only throwing event contested. Also in the field events, Grace Mathis was runner-up in the shot put as she cleared 2.74 meters. Nelson and Quigley were sixth and seventh in the long jump with respective marks of 4.49 meters and 4.48 meters.

The mile was the event where Haverford saw most of its entrants compete. Entering nine individuals into the event, the Fords came away with three top 10 finishers. Molly Hawkins led those runners with a time of 5:25.49. Amalia Axinn (5:42.04) and Jolie Jaycobs (5:47.18) were sixth and ninth in the final standings. Those three runners teamed up with Amy Zamora for the 4x400 meter relay which placed third in a time of 4:38.81. Marly Banatte (1:06.25) and Mariana Ramirez (2:38.30) were the Fords' top finishers in the 400 and 800 meter races.

Women's indoor track & field will return to competition on Saturday, January 13 when select individuals travel to Staten Island, New York to compete in the Albany Great Dane Classic. That meet is scheduled to get underway at 10:30 a.m. at the Ocean Breeze Complex.
