HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's indoor track & field team swept the Centennial Conference weekly awards with junior Taylor Murphy and senior Claire Sargent taking home the accolades following their performances at the Haverford Holiday Invitational.
Claire Sargent won the field award for the second time in as weeks after capturing her second straight shot put title. This week her best throw of 39 feet, eight and a half inches (12.10m) was nearly two feet clear of her closest competitor. Her most recent win came just a week after tying the school's indoor shot put record. She also owns sole possession of the College's outdoor shot put record.
Now a three-time Centennial Conference Field Athlete of the Week after her most recent honor, Sargent has won an individual shot put title 10 times in her indoor career to go along with four such wins during the outdoor season. She is a two-time Centennial Conference individual champion, winning the 2016 indoor shot put and 2017 outdoor shot put. The senior has been runner-up at the conference meet on three other occasions at the conference championships, combining for a total of five All-Centennial Conference honors heading into her final seasons.
Taylor Murphy won the 60 meter hurdle title in her season debut with a time of 9.30 seconds. That time was just four-hundredths of a second off her personal best time in the event. Murphy also won her heat in the 200 meters with a time of 27.51 seconds, placing second overall. She also ran the second leg of the Fords' runner-up 4x200 meter relay which placed second overall in a time of 1:52.26.
Murphy, no stranger to Centennial Conference accolades, picked up the first weekly honor of her career with this award. The reigning Centennial Conference Champion in the 60 meter hurdles, Murphy is a three-time Centennial Conference Champion overall as she was also part of the indoor 4x200 relay in 2016 and won the 100 meter hurdles during the last outdoor championship. The 2016 Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year, Murphy is already a six-time All-Centennial Conference performer through just two seasons with four of those accolades coming on the indoor surfaces.
Women's track & field concluded the 2017 portion of its indoor schedule over the weekend. The Fords will return to action Saturday, January 13 with the running of Albany Great Dane Classic at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.
