LANCASTER, Pa. – The Haverford College women's indoor track & field team scored 35 points and sits in fourth place overall after the first day of the Centennial Conference Championships. Haverford had numerous athletes turn in personal best times throughout the opening day and even saw a school record fall in the weight throw from Unique Tuberville as that event was contested for the first time in conference history.
Tuberville's best weight throw was measured at 12.90 meters (42'-4") to break the old school record held by Claire Sargent '18. Tuberville's throw placed her third in the field where she will garner All-Centennial Conference recognition as Saturday's performance topped her first try in the event earlier this season by nearly five and a half feet.
Haverford's highest scoring performance in the field events came from Jessica Lopez as she placed second overall with a new personal best triple jump (11.00 meters; 36'-1.25"). That mark is fourth all-time in school history and placed her second in the field as she too will garner All-CC accolades. Kerry Quigley was ninth in that event with a jump of 9.48 meters (31'-1.75").
Grace Mathis posted a fifth-place finish in the pole vault as she cleared 10 feet for the first time in her indoor career with the bar set at 3.07 meters (10'-0.75"). Mathis is now in second place all-time in Haverford's record books for the indoor pole vault. Louise Bednarik contested the pentathlon and was credited with a sixth-place finish as she scored 1,780 points over the five events. Her big events came on the track where she scored 483 points in the 60 meter hurdles and 400 points in the 800 meters.
The two relays that were contested on Saturday also saw the Fords leave their marks on those record books. The second-place 4x200 relay of newly minted All-CC performers Tess Oberholtzer, Lopez, Naomi Fukuda, and Jasmine Reed finished with the 10th best time in school history. That relay was just 12-hundredths of a second behind Ursinus for the conference title. Haverford's DMR recorded a third-place finish with Griffin Kaulbach, Julia Coletti, Hannah Yeakey, and Sophie Drew making up the four legs.
In addition to the scoring performances, both Lopez and Oberholtzer put themselves in scoring position for Sunday with their heat races. Lopez, the top seed in the 60 meter dash, cut another hundredth of a second off her personal best and qualified second for that event final with a time of 7.95 seconds. She now holds sole possession of second place in the school record books. Oberholtzer cut nearly two-tenths of a second off her personal best in the 60 meter hurdles. Her time of 9.56 seconds placed her third in the heats and ranks her sixth in the College's record book. Those event finals will be contested on Sunday.
The 5,000 meter race was also contested on Saturday. Although the Fords did not have any scorers, three of the team's four entrants beat their seed times coming into the weekend. Angie Petrichenko (19:05.09) was the Fords' highest finisher as she placed 11th overall. Izzy Miller (19:17.84), Julia Smith (19:31.39), and Mckenna Krall (19:57.32) were also entered in that event.
The 2019 Centennial Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships will wrap up tomorrow. The women's events get underway on Sunday with the long jump at 11:30 a.m. and continue through the 4x400 relay which is slated for a 3:55 p.m. start.
