Women's track makes presence known at WCU Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Haverford College women's track and field team continued the outdoor season at the West Chester (University) Invitational on Saturday.

Several Fords registered top times over the course of the day highlighted by a pair of standout performances by sprinter Brittany Steele. Steele finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.84 seconds that currently ranks second in the Centennial Conference this spring. The freshman also ran well in the 200 as she crossed the line in 26.71 to take fifth.

Junior Jade Andrade just missed a top-10 finish in the 100 with a career-best time of 13.61 that was good for 11th.

Haverford placed two in the top 10 in the 400 as seniors Erin Seglem and Stephanie Kahn finished seventh and ninth, respectively.

In her first outdoor action of the year, junior Katie Balmer came in third in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 23.47 seconds. Katherine Greifeld claimed eighth in 2:34.10.

Three Fords placed in the top 20 of a field of almost 50 for the 1,500-meter run. Sophomore Molly Allen finished 11th while seniors Chelsea Thorsheim and Nora Howe followed in 14th and 16th, respectively.

Junior Carolyn Oehrig was busy on Saturday as she finished 10th in the 100m hurdles and helped the 4x100 quartet register a third-place time of 51.57 seconds. Steele, Andrade and junior Sedona Murphy joined Oehrig in the relay. Also shining off the track, Oehrig finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 10.00 meters (32 feet, 9.75 inches).

Senior Hope Rainey got Haverford off to a good start in the two-day meet when she finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday with a time of 11:30.97. The time currently ranks first on the conference performance list.

The Fords head to Widener University next weekend for a two-day invitational beginning on Friday afternoon.
