Women's track aims for high finish at Centennial championship meet

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's track & field team will compete this weekend at the Centennial Conference outdoor championship meet hosted by Swarthmore College.

The Fords will need contributions from throughout the roster in order to attain a high finish in the extremely competitive three-day meet.

Hope Rainey is Haverford's top-seeded competitor as the senior owns the top time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this season (11 minutes, 15.77 seconds). The defending conference champion currently ranks 28th nationally on the Division III outdoor qualifying list. Nora Howe gives the Fords another scoring threat with a ninth-place seed in the event.

Freshman Brittany Steele, who won two gold medals at the indoor conference championships, enters the weekend seeded third in the 100-meter dash (12.67 seconds) and fourth in the 200 (26.23).

Nora Weathers is another runner who has an opportunity to score in two events. The sophomore is seeded third in the 800-meter run (2:17.33) and sixth in the 1,500 (4:38.47). Katie Balmer (800), Emily Scott (1,500) and Clarice Bourland (800 and 1,500) are other scoring threats in the middle distance races.

Haverford, the 2013 conference runner-up, has two of the top-seven seeds in the 10,000-meter run in senior Flora Berklein and junior Charlotte Lellman. Berklein sits in fifth with a time of 39:17.76 while Lellman ranks seventh (39:35.97).

Erin Seglem has a chance to add to the Fords' point total in the 400-meter run as the senior enters the weekend with the seventh seed (1:00.79).

Junior Carolyn Oehrig will be busy at Swarthmore with the ability to score for Haverford in several different events (100-meter hurdle, high jump, triple jump).

Coach Fran Rizzo will look for the relay teams to give the Fords a boost over the course of the weekend.
