SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Haverford College freshman Brittany Steele earned two silver medals on the final day of the Centennial Conference women's track & field outdoor championships hosted by Swarthmore College.
Steele matched the program record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.39 seconds but was nipped at the finish line by Johns Hopkins University's Brynn Parsons by one-tenth of a second. The career-best mark equals the program record set by Christina Neilson in 2009. Steele later added another second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 25.86.
Erin Seglem also came through with a career-best performance on Sunday as the senior took fourth in the 400 with a time of 59.95.
Freshman Clarice Bourland led the way in the 800 as the Fords grabbed three of the scoring places in the event. Bourland's career-best time of 2 minutes, 19.48 seconds was good for fifth while junior Katie Balmer and sophomore Nora Weathers finished in sixth (2:20.97) and eighth (2:21.93), respectively. Weathers also added to Haverford's point total in the 1,500-meter run with an eighth-place finish (4:40.90).
Senior Flora Berklein and junior Charlotte Lellman just missed scoring in the 5,000 as the duo finished in ninth and 10th, respectively.
Haverford's relay squads helped the Fords' cause as the 4x100 quartet of Sedona Murphy, Carolyn Oehrig, Jade Andrade and Steele placed fourth (51.04) while the 4x400 team of Murphy and seniors Stephanie Kahn, Seglem and Rainy finished fifth (4:07.01).
Freshman Elizabeth Reikowski tied for eighth in the triple jump with a career-best mark of 10.18 meters (33 feet, 4.75 inches).
Johns Hopkins claimed the conference crown while the Fords finished seventh in the team standings (57.50 points). Swarthmore College took third to gain another point in the final results of this year's race for the Hood Trophy. Haverford won the friendly competition between the two institutions for the 23rd consecutive year with a final score of 12-6.
