Rainey sets new program record in steeplechase

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Hope Rainey of the Haverford College women's outdoor track & field team established a new program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at a final qualifying meet hosted by Swarthmore College on Monday.

Rainey, who came close to breaking the program record with her gold-medal performance at this year's Centennial Conference championships, finished first in Monday night's steeplechase with a time of 10 minutes, 48.21 seconds. The new program-best mark is almost seven seconds faster than the former record of 10:55.15 established by Maxine Markfield '07 in her senior season. Rainey, a two-time conference champion in the steeplechase, won the event by over 20 seconds and moved into ninth on the national qualifer list with the historic performance.

Also running well on Monday was Rainey's classmate Emily Scott. Competing in her final collegiate race, Scott finished 22nd in the 1,500-meter run with a career-best time of 4:38.98. Scott was the eighth Division-III finisher of a field heavily populated by D-I and unattached runners. Sophomore Nora Weathers placed 38th in the 1,500 in 4:49.89.

Katie Balmer just missed a new season-best time in the 800-meter run as the junior finished 19th in 2:18.41.

The 2014 NCAA D-III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place May 22-24 in Delaware, Ohio.
