CARLISLE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's outdoor track & field team had four scoring performances on Saturday and set itself up for a strong showing on Sunday with eight qualifiers to the finals of their respective races.
Haverford's top individual scorer came in the steeplechase where Maggie Heffernan finished second overall in a time of 11:23.37. That mark will earn her second-team All-Centennial Conference accolades and scored eight points for the Fords. Nicole Giannetti was eighth in that same race to score with a time of 11:49.26.
The Fords' third scoring event on the track came in the final event of Saturday as the Fords placed fourth overall in the 4x800 relay. The Fords' relay team crossed the line in a time of 9:38.70. Emily Anderson added a fifth place finish and four points to the team score with her 34.55 meter throw in the discus.
As a team, Haverford has scored 25 points and currently sits in sixth place in the team standings. However, the Fords will have plenty of chances to climb the leaderboard following a strong showing in the preliminary heats on Saturday.
Taylor Murphy qualified in the 100 meter hurdles (15.22 seconds), 100 meter dash (12.82 seconds) and 200 meter dash (25.99 seconds). She was second in the heats for the hurdles, while also running the fourth fastest time in the 200 meter and seventh quickest time in the 100 meter dash. Brittany Steele will join her in the sprints as she qualified third in the 200 meters (25.94) and sixth in the 100 meters (12.74).
Previewing the mid-distance races tomorrow, the Fords had a pair of top four showings in the 800 meter trails. Katie Sullivan ran the second quickest time in those heats on Saturday (2:15.22), while Nora Weathers (2:16.88) was fourth overall. Kerry Quigley also qualified the final spot in the 400 meters as she crossed the line in a time of 1:02.83.
Sunday marks the final day of the Centennial Conference Championship. Tomorrow's competition gets underway at 11 a.m. with the 4x100 relay on the track and the javelin in the field events.
