HAVERFORD, Pa. - Sophomores Meg O'Day and Keri Godbe each reached double figures in kills as the Haverford College volleyball team swept past visiting Johns Hopkins University, 3-0, in Centennial Conference action at Gooding Arena on Friday night.
Playing their second match in as many nights, the Fords (16-7, 3-4 CC) showed no signs of fatigue as they moved ahead 10-6 in the first set. The Blue Jays (8-8, 4-2) responded with a surge of their own to go on top 20-16 but Haverford fought back to tie the score at 21-21. The score remained tight over the remainder of the set but the Fords came out on top with a 26-24 victory.
Johns Hopkins took an early lead (2-1) in set two but it would be short-lived as Haverford continued its solid play. A service error by Johns Hopkins' Taylor Jansen gave the Fords a 4-3 lead and they never looked back as they forced the defending conference champion Blue Jays to play from behind the rest of the set. Six different players registered kills as Haverford claimed a 25-19 win.
Aiming to extend the match, Johns Hopkins went ahead 19-18 in set three but the Fords knew they had their 10th sweep of the season within their reach. The defense tightened up down the stretch to limit the Blue Jays to just two more points while Godbe and Jeanna Kenney supplied the offense with two kills and two service aces, respectively, to help Haverford close out the match with a 25-21 victory.
O'Day paced the offense with 14 kills and Godbe added 12 as the duo accounted for 26 of the Fords' 37 kills on the night.
Sophomore Olivia Walsh and freshman Abby Keller each reached double digits in assists with 18 and 12, respectively. Kenney finished with a career-high three service aces.
Godbe, the reigning conference player of the week, registered her seventh consecutive double-double with a team-high 13 digs. O'Day was also a force on defense as she tallied four block assists.
Meagan Donohoe led Johns Hopkins with 11 kills while Caitlin Callihan chipped in with 10.
Snapping a three-match losing streak to the Blue Jays, the Fords have now accounted for Johns Hopkins' last two 3-0 defeats in conference action as the Blue Jays' were last swept in Centennial play in October of 2010 at Gooding Arena.
Looking to gain momentum from the impressive conference victory, Haverford travels to Moravian College on Tuesday night for a non-conference contest against the Greyhounds beginning at 7 p.m.
