Solid team effort pushes Fords past Moravian, 3-1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Sarah Brody tallied a match-high 22 digs to help the Haverford College volleyball team rally post host Moravian College, 3-1, on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

Shaking off a 25-20 setback in the opening set, the Fords (17-7) earned wins in the next three sets (25-17, 25-16, 25-23) to claim the come-from-behind victory.

Both squads finished with 43 kills in the match so it was the Haverford defense that proved to be the difference-maker in the contest. The Fords finished with 61 digs on the night as each of the 10 players to see action tallied at least one dig. Reaching double figures in digs for the ninth consecutive match and 20th time this season, Godbe accumulated 14 digs.

Haveford's sound team defense led to 31 hitting errors by the visitors as the Greyhounds (10-19) registered a mere .083 hitting percentage on the night.

Sophomore Meg O'Day came through with her 18th double-digit kill performance of the season as she paced the Fords with 12. Olivia Walsh and Abby Keller helped the cause with 16 assists apiece.

Haverford grabbed momentum in the contest with a sparkling hitting performance in set three. The Fords' hitting percentage of .500 included 14 kills and just two attack errors with Godbe, O'Day, Elena Garcia and Madison Fuelling accounting for three kills apiece.

The final set again showcased a balanced attack as six different Haverford players recorded kills in the Fords' narrow 25-23 victory.

Freshman Taylor Kornmann led Moravian with 12 kills while senior Kelly Brown tallied a match-high 33 assists. Brown and sophomore Andrea Giardina shared team-high honors with 13 digs each.

Haverford's schedule continues on Saturday as it hosts a tri-match at Gooding Arena. The day's slate begins at 11 a.m. with the Fords taking on Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference play. After the Garnet and Messiah College battle at 1 p.m., the Fords will entertain the Falcons at 3 p.m. in a non-conference contest to close out the full day of action.
