Volleyball Trio Reflects on Enriching Internship Experiences

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Madison Fuelling, Sarah Brody and Jeanna Kenney will play key roles as the Haverford College volleyball team eyes a Centennial Conference playoff berth this fall. The trio has more than volleyball on their minds this summer, however, as they partake in internship opportunities enabled by their Haverford connections.

Fuelling '15, a history major from La Verne, Calif., has been spending the summer working at a small, non-profit company called Pennsylvania Health Care Quality Alliance (PHCQA) that does data analysis and public reporting of quality measures of health care in Pennsylvania. The company's ties to Haverford run deep as Erik Muther '94, Debbie Gilbert '12 and Katherine Bigay '13 are all employed there.

Muther is the executive director of the company that works closely with the Health Care Improvement Foundation to produce reports on the progress of the state of health care quality and its improvement over the years. PHCQA also runs a website (PHCQA.org), which "compiles selected outcome and quality data from the federal Medicare program (CMS), the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Joint Commission for Pennsylvania's general acute care hospitals in a single location designed to help patients and consumers make better health care choices."

"Most of the work done at the company is project-based, such as producing reports and analyzing data for specific areas of improvement or weakness," said Fuelling. "I have been able to enjoy working closely with Haverford alumni in a small work environment which allows me to gain experience in every aspect of the company and the fulfilling work we do."

Fuelling's classmate Brody '15 is completing an internship in Private Bank Ultra High Net Worth Asset Management at J.P. Morgan in Philadelphia. "Most of what I do is creating and going over financial reports and various prospecting projects which seek to find new clients to bring to the firm," said Brody. The economics major from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. has seen firsthand how employers value a Haverford College education as former Haverford athletes Leks Gerlak '11, Bryan Henrick '12 and Alex Hudak '13 all work at J.P Morgan. "Haverford is an extremely close and supportive community, and I have been so lucky this summer to experience the extension of the Haverford community available after graduation," reflected Brody.

Kenney '16 has also been hard at work this summer as an intern at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, one of the 12 district banks in the US Federal Reserve System. "I am working in the Supervision, Regulation, and Credit (SRC) Department," said the economics major.

The 17 business units of the SRC work together to ensure a safe banking and financial sector in order to promote economic stability. Some responsibilities of the department include monitoring financial institutions, examining consumer protections, and recommending policy when appropriate.

The unit within SRC for which Kenney is working is called RADAR, or Risk Assessment, Data Analysis and Research. "I am working with the Data Warehouse team, which houses and manages the data which all members of the Federal Reserve System can use to conduct the research necessary to support the objectives of the Fed," commented the defensive specialist. The members of RADAR not only do their own research projects, but also work to provide accessible, relevant data to the Federal Reserve System employees. Kenney points out this is particularly important, because it "ensures that the banking industry is adequately assessable, which allows for informed policy decisions and a transparent financial sector."

Kenney has spent time validating potential data acquisitions, performing preliminary data analysis for research projects, and helping to organize system-wide training sessions for RADAR's newest online data download tools. Her main project for the remainder of the summer will be working with her manager to research the mortgage industry. The native of Wallingford, Pa. will specifically be looking at various foreclosure laws, and how they affect the length of the foreclosure process, and in turn house price and credit score recovery.

Kenney sums up what it means to have such a rewarding and informative experience this summer. "Haverford is like a community of communities," commented Kenney. "Your team, your customs group, your academic department, and more -- each becomes its own important community within the world of Haverford that really looks out for you."
