Volleyball Goes 2-0, Picks Up Victory in Conference Opener

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team had its second 2-0 day of the season as the Fords took care of the Dickinson Red Devils 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 25-9) in their Centennial Conference opener and then defeated the Messiah Falcons 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) in a non-conference match.

Haverford began its day at the Kline Center on the campus of Dickinson College. Junior Meg O'Day had 15 kills and a .500 attack percentage in the four set win. In the fourth set, she had seven kills on seven attempts to help the Fords seal the victory. Following the match, the team made the 25 minute drive to the Hitchcock Arena on the campus of Messiah College.

The Fords took the first set against the Falcons behind O'Day's team-leading five kills and .714 attack percentage on seven attempts. The first set was evenly played with no team having a lead of more than three until Haverford ended the set scoring 10 of the final 15 points to score an early lead in the match. Haverford held Messiah to a .162 attack percentage in the set victory.

Messiah took an early 11-6 lead in the second set before Haverford rallied back to tie it at 14. Haverford went on an 8-2 run to get some breathing room at 22-16 and eventually took the set 25-21. The Fords continued their great defensive effort holding the Falcons to a .053 attack percentage in the set.

Haverford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in set three before Messiah tied it at 8-8. With the score tied at 11, the Fords went on a 9-2 run to take a 20-13 advantage and the Falcons never got any closer than five points.

O'Day paced Haverford with 11 kills, a .562 attack percentage and currently has a 23 match streak of at least ten kills. Junior Nina Mutty finished one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and a team-high 16 digs. Junior Keri Godbe was two kills shy of a double-double, tallying eight kills and 13 digs in the victory. Junior Jeanna Kenney had 14 digs while freshman Zoe Wong led the team with 14 assists.

Jane Underman led the Falcons with 11 kills while Brooke Gallagher had a game-high 27 assists in the loss. The Fords held the non-conference foe to just a .076 attack percentage in the match.

Head coach Michele's Benoit's squad improved its record to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference. Volleyball will host Centennial Conference foe McDaniel at the GIAC on Wednesday beginning 7 p.m.
