Volleyball Registers Wins Over Gettysburg, Cabrini

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College volleyball team registered a pair of home victories on Saturday, besting the Gettysburg College Bullets 3-0 in a Centennial Conference showdown before dispatching Cabrini in a 3-1 contest. Haverford now sits at 8-8 (1-3 Centennial) on the season following the duel triumphs.

Haverford went with a new-look lineup as Maddie Becker was summoned in the libero position for the first time this season. The result was a breakout contest against Gettysburg, taking down the Bullets with set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-22.

Haverford and the Bullets were locked in a tense one for most of the first half, with the visitors running out to an 18-15 lead after the Fords had rallied for a 15-15 tie. Francesca Garison recorded a kill to force a Haverford timeout at 18-15. The Fords then went on a 4-0 run after the timeout as Julia Gallagher-Teske recorded a pair of kills to run the score to 19-18 in favor of Haverford, leading to a timeout from the visitors. Garsion posted a kill to tie it at 19-19 but an Elena Garcia kill and a Becker service ace made it 21-19 Haverford. The Fords used a Natalie Pisch kill to end the set at 25-19.

Haverford hit .395 in the second set, taking control with an 11-6 run to begin the frame. Zoe Wong and Valentine Courouble recorded kills wrapped around a Garison attack error, forcing a Gettysburg timeout. Haverford stretched the advantage to 22-12 with a 9-0 run that saw the Fords playing perhaps their best volleyball of the season thus far. Hailey O'Mara was at the service line for the run, which included a pair of service aces to cap the impressive stretch. The set ended on consecutive kills from Courouble at 25-14.

The Third set went to the Fords after Haverford and Gettysburg traded early points. Kaylynn Mayo served the hosts to four straight points to go up 14-8 before the Bullets fought back to cut the lead to just two with a Garison kill at 17-15. Haverford called timeout, and posted consecutive points on a Stephanie Blair handling error and a Mayo kill to go up 19-15.  The Bullets got to within two as late as 24-22, but an emphatic block from Courouble and Gallagher-Teske put an exclamation point on a Centennial win.

Courouble had 13 kills while Pisch added 10.  Wong had 30 assists from the setter position while Becker posted 23 digs. Gallagher-Teske added four blocks.  Lauren Godshalk (9 kills) and Garison (8) led the way for the visitors, who hit just .126 for the match.

The second game of the afternoon for Haverford was a matchup against Main Line foe Cabrini. The Fords took the match in four with set scores of 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-15.

After dropping the first set, Haverford responded with a set two victory. Haverford went ahead by two at 12-10 after a back-and-forth start and pushed the advantage to three as late as 18-15 as Pisch sent down a kill to force Cabrini into timeout. The Fords pushed the lead to 22-18 with Mayo serving as Gallagher-Teske recorded a kill. Cabrini called timeout again and Mayo committed a service error ahead of an Ashley Shannon service ace to cut the lead to just 22-20. A pair of errors and a kill from Zoe Wong gave Haverford the set victory to tie the score at one apiece.

The Fords cruised in the third set, outscoring Cabrini 11-4 after a 14-14 tie. Pisch served Haverford to a four-point run that included a pair of Mayo kills and a Courouble tally. Courouble gave Haverford the 2-1 lead with a kill to end the set at 25-18.

The Fourth set was deadlocked early, with Cabrini having some momentum before the defining moment of the set took place. At 14-12, Ashley Shannon was the server for the Cavaliers. After Pisch delivered a kill and Becker took her turn at the service line unsuccessfully to cut the lead to 14-13 for the Fords, Shannon was again the server for the visitors, pushing the lead to 16-14 with a service run. After a lengthy delay to discuss the evident rotation error, Haverford was awarded the three points where Cabrini was out of rotation for a 16-13 lead.

O'Mara then led the Fords on a 4-0 run, including three Cabrini errors. Cabrini was able to stop the run, cutting the score to 19-14, but Haverford scored all but one of the remaining points in the match, taking down the visitors in four with a final set score of 25-15.

Pisch and Courouble had 13 and 12 kills, respectively while Elena Garcia added eight. Zoe Wong recorded a career-best 40 assists and six kills in the contest while O'Mara had a career-best five service aces. Becker (29) led three in double-digit digs with a career-high. Gallagher-Teske posted a career-high three block solos.

The Fords will next return to action with a Centennial Conference match at Ursinus on Wednesday. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
