Volleyball Takes Down McDaniel, Baruch In Senior Day Tri-Match

HAVERFORD, Pa. – In a Senior Day tri-match at Gooding '84 Arena, the Haverford Volleyball team downed conference foe McDaniel, 3-1, in a rematch of the 2015 Centennial Conference Championship game.  The Fords also won the second match of the day, powering past Baruch 3-0. Set scores for the McDaniel match were 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 25-27 as the Fords withstood a late comeback from the visitors.  Set scores for the Baruch matchup were 25-16, 25-8 and 25-14. Haverford improves to 15-11 on the season (5-3 Centennial) with the pair of wins, holding off McDaniel in the conference playoff chase. The Green Terror falls to 12-13 (3-5 CC) after a split.

Haverford 3, McDaniel 1

The Fords jumped out to a 17-12 lead on McDaniel in the first set of the day, and quickly stretched the lead to 20-13, prompting a McDaniel timeout.  Haverford used a kill from Natalie Pisch to take command at 24-16 before a Lexi Corral service error ended things in favor of the hosts. Haverford hit .333 in the first set to just .167 for the Green Terror.

The second set also went to the Fords. The set was tied at 8-8 after a Pisch service ace, and McDaniel went ahead at 9-8 before the Fords rattled off six to go up 14-9. Maddie Becker was integral at the service line and Courouble contributed a kill as well as a block with Julia Gallagher-Teske.

McDaniel battled back, trailing by just one as late as 16-15, but a crucial block from Gallagher-Teske and Pisch made it 18-15 Fords and a pair of Green Terror errors stretched the Ford advantage to 20-15.Haverford made it 22-17 with a pair of attack errors from McDaniel, but the Green Terror had some life left, cutting the lead to 22-19 and prompting timeout from the Fords. A Pisch kill put Haverford up 23-19 and Courouble had a kill to make it 24-20. Courouble also had the final flourish of the set, giving Haverford a 2-0 lead at 25-21.

The Fords had a 16-9 advantage and appeared able to cruise towards victory in the third, but McDaniel used a service run from Taylor Bauman to pull ahead 18-17. The teams traded points until McDaniel went ahead with a Patricia Davie kill at 24-22, prompting a Haverford timeout. Corral's errant serve cut it to 24-23, but Davie again delivered a kill for a 25-23 final in the third.

The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair with McDaniel taking the lead at 18-15 with three straight as Corral, Allie Lugar and Lauren Wills also pushed down kills to prompt a Haverford stoppage.  The hosts rallied to tie at 21-21 as Becker finished a successful service run causing a pair of McDaniel errors. Courouble put the Fords ahead 23-22 and a Davie attack error had the Fords on the cusp of a match win at 24-22.  McDaniel rallied to tie the set at 24-24 and the teams traded points, tying at 25-25. The Fords called for a timeout and following the break, Pisch delivered a huge kill to give the Fords match point.  A block from Gallagher-Teske and Pisch ended the match in favor of the home team 27-25 as the conference's top blocking team put the plaudit on display.

Courouble's 19 kills paved the way for Haverford and Pisch also contributed 11. Wong had 41 assists while Gallagher-Teske had a career-high three block solos and three block assists to extend her Centennial Conference lead in the category. Becker contributed a career-best four service aces while Pisch had a career-best three. Haverford had 11 service aces to just one for McDaniel.  The Fords improved to 16-11 all-time against the Green Terror and won for the eighth straight time in the series at home.

For McDaniel, Coral, Davie and Lugar each had double-digit kill totals. Maddie Moyer had 23 assists while Lauren Wells contributed 21.

Before the game, the Fords honored the contributions of Courouble, Elena Garcia, Kaylynn Mayo and Abby Keller, who have combined for 78 wins in their four seasons on campus and reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals in 2014, in the midst of three-consecutive 20 win seasons.

Haverford 3, Baruch 0

In the second match of the day, Haverford was able to breeze past Baruch College, thanks in part to a .667 hitting percentage in the second set, an error free effort for the hosts.

In the first set, Baruch hung with the Fords, with the set tied at 9-9. Haverford went ahead at 14-11 before three straight Baruch points off Haverford errors tied it at 14-14.  The hosts stretched the advantage to 19-14 as Wong picked up a kill and a Becker service run set the tone of the set, with Kaylynn Mayo picking up a pair of crucial kills in the stretch. Haverford closed the set on a 6-2 run to win 25-16 with a Sara Matsumura service run ending on two straight Bearcat errors.

The second set saw Haverford play nearly flawless volleyball. Five straight Bearcat errors gave Haverford an 11-3 lead and after Baruch cut the advantage to 14-6, Abby Keller was subbed in to the contest as the server and delivered a memorable run in her final regular season home game. The 11-0 swing put the Fords up 24-6 with six Baruch errors, a pair of service aces from Keller and kills from Gallagher-Teske and Courouble. Baruch battled back, determinedly, to cut the lead to 24-8, but Haverford was able to side out to take the set as Hailey O'Mara got into the action with a kill for a 25-8 win.

The third set saw Haverford out to an early 18-8 lead behind a Matsumura service run that turned a 4-2 Baruch lead into an 11-4 Fords advantage. Haverford stretched the 18-8 score line into 21-10 and never looked back from that point despite Baruch taking half of the remaining points. Haverford won 25-14 with a Marisa Bou service error the winning point.

Courouble added 11 kills while Mayo had seven to hit .429 on the match. Pisch hit .500 taking 10 kills on 18 swings. Wong had 30 assists while Becker had 16 digs. Elena Garcia had a career-best two assists in the contest while Christine Anderson tallied two digs for a career-best effort.

For the Bearcats, Alessandra Chavez had four kills to lead the squad while Stephanie Cornwell contributed 11 assists. Haverford improves to 4-0 all-time against Baruch College.

The Fords will next return to action on Wednesday as the Centennial Conference stretch run continues with a trip to the Old Line State to take on Washington College. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. The Fords will then wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Swarthmore in the annual Hood Trophy clash between the long-time Delaware Valley rivals.
