Volleyball Falls to York in Spartan Invitational Opener

YORK, Pa. – In its first contest at the Spartan Invitational on the campus of York College of Pennyslvania, the Haverford College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the host Spartans inside the Charles Wolf Gymnasium on Friday evening. Set scores for the match were 25-22, 25-21, and 25-22. The Fords are now 1-4 on the season while York improves to 2-2 overall with the win at home. 

Haverford was paced offensively by first year Dina Kosyagin who had eight kills and four blocks. Caroline Baldwin impressed in her collegiate debut, notching three kills and four total blocks. Haverford turned in an outstanding blocking peformance overall with 12 total team blocks, the most in a three-set match since a 23-block performance at Eastern in 2006. Six different Fords contributed denials as Julia Gallagher-Teske had six to lead the way. Sara Matsumura matched a career-best in the category with three. 

On defense, Elena Filograna recorded 18 digs while Sara Matsumura collected 13. The pair each served two aces.  Sydney Miller continued her strong season with 21 assists while adding a kill, a service ace, and two blocks. Natalie Pisch had another well rounded effort with seven kills against just one error on 25 total swings. Pisch also was a part of two blocks. 

The Fords return to action on Saturday with a pair of matches in York. Haverford faces off with NYU at 10 a.m. before returning for an afternoon matchup with Gallaudet to wrap up the weekend at 2 p.m. Haverford is 3-3 all-time against NYU, with the last meeting between the two programs coming in 2015. The Fords are 2-4 all-time against Gallaudet, with the last match between the two sides occuring in 2008.
