Women's cross country takes 3rd at Paul Short Brown race

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Haverford College women's cross country team ran to a third-place finish Saturday afternoon in the Brown Race of the 2013 Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University.

Senior Emily Scott paced the impressive effort for the Fords with an 18th-place finish of 22 minutes and 20 seconds. Scott was one of just four Division III runners to finish in the top 20 of the 365-runner field.

Haverford, ranked 25th in this week's United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) D-III national poll, was the first D-III squad to finish the six-kilometer course as the Fords' five scoring runners totaled 225 points. Dickinson College, also of the Centennial Conference and currently ranked 18th nationally, finished in fourth (252 points). Holy Cross (176 points) captured the team title by a mere eight points over runner-up Shippensburg University (184 points).

Sophomore Nora Weathers gave Haverford two finishers in the top 30 as she placed 27th in 22:36. Juniors Charlotte Lellman (32nd, 22:41) and Kelley Riffenburgh (34th, 22:42) followed closely behind as the Fords' top four finishers crossed the line within 22 seconds of each other.

Freshman Clarice Bourland (114th, 23:52) finished right in front of teammate Flora Berklein (115th) to become Haverford's final scorer in the race.

Earlier in the day, sophomore Maggie Heffernan was the first Haverford finisher in the Open 6K race as she placed 62nd with a time of 22:58.
