Women's Cross Country Wins Haverford Invitational

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's cross country team picked up its third team title in the last four races on Friday afternoon at the Haverford Invitational. Running against three other local teams, the Fords put each of their top five runners among the first eight finishers. Haverford's 29 points edged out Eastern's score of 35 for first place. Philadelphia University (82 points) and Widener (91) rounded out the field.

Of the Fords 10 entrants in the race, six individuals raced to personal best times for the meet. For two others, it was their first time competing in college at the three-mile distance. Sophia Drew was Haverford's first runner across the line to break up Eastern's top three runners. Drew's time of 19:30.0 topped her previous best by seven seconds.

After Eastern's third runner crossed the line, it was all Haverford runners as the team swept the fifth through eighth positions. Molly Allen was Haverford's second finisher with a time of 19:44.9 as she placed fifth. Allison Hacker ran a nearly one minute personal best to place sixth overall with a time of 19:49.9. Caroline Henry and Julia Smith rounded out the team's top five. Henry's time of 19:52.6 was her first at this distance. Smith's 40 second personal best of 20:02.8 placed her eighth.

Alison Love also recorded a top 10 finish with a time of 20:24.8 as the team's sixth finisher, a nearly 30 second improvement for her previous best. Marie Vastola (20:50.2) placed 15th in the field, while Liana Alves' personal best run of 21:10.0 placed her 18th.

Stephanie Lukez (21:41.8) and Michaela Novakovic (21:54.1) also turned in personal best times during their respective 21st and 24th place finishes. Amanda Glavin rounded out the Haverford contingent with a 27th place showing in a time of 22:16.3.

Women's cross country will now begin preparations for next week's Centennial Conference Championship. The conference championship will be held at Owings Mills, Md. The women's championship race will get underway at 11 a.m.
