Field hockey flushes Royals, 8-2

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Tuesday's field hockey game between host Haverford College and the University of Scranton had all the makings of a high-scoring affair early in the contest. Four goals were scored in the first eight minutes, but Haverford continued its offensive onslaught while thwarting the Royals attack for an 8-2 victory at Swan Field.

Both teams scored on their first two shots of the game. Scranton (2-2) scored first as Kaitlyn Tierney scored off a penalty corner in the second minute. The Fords countered four minutes later when Mary Hobbs tallied her first of two goals. Haverford (3-1) took a brief lead in the sixth minute when Hobbs set up Alex Waleko off a corner. The Royals evened things up, scoring off a corner again. Corrie Szapka knocked in the goal on an assist from Kaela Mahon.

Haverford simply dominated for the remainder of the game, outshooting the Royals 31-3 and taking 13 more corners. The Fords added two more goals in the half. Christie Quake scored the go-ahead goal by collecting a rebound in the 19th minute.

Waleko and Hobbs had a hand in all eight goals for the Fords. Waleko tied a career-high with three goals and tallied a career-best eight points. Her first hat trick came Sept. 25, 2008 against Bryn Mawr. Hobbs' three assists and seven points are both new career-highs.

Maggie Cronin recorded the win, playing the final 59:53 in goal and allowing no goals. Alexandria Marandino started between the pipes for the Royals and took the loss, allowing the first four goals.

The Fords will face a tough task in their next game as they travel to No. 4 Ursinus College to open Centennial Conference play. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
