ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Haverford College field hockey team (2-3) was upended by host Elizabethtown (3-2) in overtime on Wednesday evening. Haverford got into a 2-0 hole thanks to a pair of penalty stroke goals from the Blue Jays, but rallied to tie things and send the contest into a sudden-victory overtime period. Chloe Smith had all three goals for the Blue Jays, including the overtime winner to complete the hat-trick for the hosts.

A scoreless first period saw both sides getting a feel for the rhythm of the contest, with Haverford taking much of the early momentum behind some early corner trys and shots from Olivia Ahart, Dalia Bercow, Zoey Despines, and Holly Vincent. In the first frame, Haverford outshot Elizabethtown 8-0, and held a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners.

In total, the Fords held a dominating edge in both shots and penalty corners, with a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 23-2 edge in corners as that first period served as a precursor of things to come with the Fords on the offensive side of the ball, applying pressure and making the Blue Jays' defense work fiercely to keep them off the scoreboard.

A penalty stroke from Chloe Smith in the 26th minute put Elizabethtown ahead 1-0, and after the halftime intermission, another foul in the penalty area was called on the Fords, leading Smith to again line up in position to knock a shot into the cage for a 2-0 advantage for the Blue Jays.

Undaunted, the Fords now looked to chase down the game, and got closer to that goal thanks to a barrage of penalty corner opportunities into the second half. Anna Kirn opened the fourth quarter with a goal to trim the Elizabethtown lead to just one in the 46th minute, and Anna Bradley then found a goal of her own off a penalty corner try in the 51st minute to tie the score, sending her teammates into celebration as the Fords climbed all the way back in the contest with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation.

Haverford applied pressure on the offensive side in the final moments, but eventually regulation ended with the two sides scoreless and heading to an extra period of action.

In that seven-on-seven extra session, the Fords again had the early edge with possession in the attacking third from the opening whistle, with Ahart and Bradley each getting solid looks on frame as the Fords earned back-to-back penalty corners.  Eventually, a penalty corner was called on the side of Elizabethtown in the 64th minute. Megan Meyer sent a feed into Chloe Smith, who was able to bury a shot into the back of the cage to send the hosts to the win.

Ahart paced the Fords with seven shots on the evening, putting five of those on frame. Bercow put all three of her shots on frame, while Kirn and Bradley each added two. Mary Smith made two saves.

Haverford now returns to action on Saturday, September 17, traveling to No. 2 Rowan for a noon first pass in South Jersey.
