PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Division III Haverford College men's basketball team has spent the first couple of months of the season turning heads in the Centennial Conference.

The Fords are off to one of the best starts in program history with a record of 8-1. They are 4-0 in Centennial action.

Haverford is enjoying this success under the watchful eye of third-year head coach Patrick Doherty.

“The biggest key for us is we have a big group of seniors — six of them in the program — that have just been completely committed to what we're trying to do and improving every day,” he said. “They've been outstanding leaders for our program. I'm just really happy for them because none of them have experienced a whole lot of winning in their time here, and it's nice to have a couple weeks, a couple of months where we're playing pretty well and we're on the right side of the scoreboard.”

The Fords went 7-18 in Doherty's first season, improved to 10-15 last season and obviously have taken another big step forward so far this season.

“I don't know that we're that different in terms of how we're playing,” Doherty said. “We're just executing what we're trying to do a little bit better and the guys are a little more comfortable with our defensive plan and what we're trying to do in every game that we play offensively.

“It doesn't really change a whole lot for us from game-to-game, honestly even from year-to-year. I mean, we have some different guys out there, and I think one of the things that's been pretty clear is they're very comfortable playing together in the style that we're trying to play.”

Doherty said junior forward Jesse Turkson has been the most productive player this season. He leads the team in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.9 rpg).

The Fords don't return to game action until the new year. On Jan. 3, Haverford will host Delaware Valley University.
