Men's Lacrosse Battles No. 12 Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Giving No. 12 Ursinus everything it could handle in the early going, the Haverford College men's lacrosse team held a 2-1 edge in a defensive battle after Brandon Boccellari gave the Fords their second lead of the night with 8:20 to play in the second period. However, a 15 minute scoreless stretch allowed the nationally-ranked Bears to run off seven straight goals. That deficit proved too much to overcome despite Haverford outscoring Ursinus in the fourth period as the Fords dropped an 11-5 decision.

Boccellari's go-ahead goal in the second period was his first of two goals on the evening. He was joined in the scoring column by Alejandro Vega, Patrick Girard and Tav Hafner. Geoff Geppert also tallied a pair of assists to set up the Haverford attack on Wednesday evening.

Not backing down from the nationally-ranked opposition, Haverford struck first when Vega scored his second goal of the season just over 11 minutes into the contest for the game's first tally. The Fords' first goal came in unassisted fashion. The Bears answered back just a over minute later before another defensive stalemate ensued.

Boccellari's first goal of the night came off an assist from Geppert midway through the second period. The Fords held that 2-1 edge for nearly three minutes and had three more shots at goal to try and extend the lead before Ursinus knotted the game at two-all with 5:45 to play in the half. The Bears began to find their stride offensively with three more goals to close the half and three more at the start of the third period.

Hafner's first goal of the season at the 5:09 mark of the third period broke Ursinus' run. His goal was set up by Geppert's second helper of the night and sixth of the season. Haverford finished the game with a 2-1 win in the fourth period. Boccellari tallied his second goal of the night and third of the season with 8:58 to play in the game. Just under five minutes later, Girard's ninth goal of the season capped the scoring in the Centennial Conference battle.

Eric Caliendo made 13 saves during the contest. His counterpart, Brian Neff, stopped nine Haverford shots on the night. Six different Haverford players caused a turnover in the conference clash. Caliendo led the Fords with four ground ball pickups, while Max Ellis added three more to the stat sheet.

Men's lacrosse will wrap up its 2015 season this Saturday against rival Swarthmore. That rivalry game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time. Saturday's contest will also be Senior Day for the seven members of the Haverford College men's lacrosse Class of 2015.
