Ainsley assumes lead in heptathlon after Day 1 at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – Day one of the heptathlon event is complete at the Widener (University) Field Meet and Haverford College's Jeffrey Ainsley will take a 255-point lead into the final three events Friday after posting three first-place performances Thursday during the day's four events.

Ainsley raced to the front in the day's first event, the 55-meter dash, to earn 745 points and the hep's initial lead.

The next three events ended with three season-best performances for the freshman. His best leap in Thursday's long jump was an event-best 6.24 meters (20 feet, 5.75 inches) and Ainsley followed that with his best height in the high jump, clearing 1.86m (6-1.25) for another first-place finish.

His final event of the day, the shot put, also provided a season best as Ainsley's toss of 10.59m (34-09) was second-farthest trailing only Widener's Kal McCloskey.

The heptathlon concludes Friday at Widener with the pole vault, 55-meter hurdles and 1,000-meter run. Ainsley enters day two with 2,584 points followed by Dennis Nguyen of Widener (2,329) and Lee Orzol (2,267) of DeSales University.
