HAVERFORD, Pa. – Haverford senior Greg Morgan headlines the field as the top seed in the 3,000 meters at the 2019 NCAA Division III Championships, which will be held on March 8-9 at the Reggie Lewis Center in the Roxbury section of Boston. Morgan becomes Haverford's 63rd individual qualifier to the NCAA indoor meet. For each men's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition.
Morgan will look to add to an indoor legacy at Haverford that includes 63 All-Americans and 10 individual national champions. Last season, Dylan Gearinger took home the 3,000-meter crown, as Morgan will look to become Haverford's second consecutive national champion in the event. An event title would represent Haverford's first back-to-back championship in an event since Karl Paranya captured three straight indoor mile crowns from 1994-97.
The 3,000-meter prelims are slated for 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon, while the final is slated for 4:55 p.m. on Saturday. Morgan enters as the top seeded entrant in the 3,000, with his seed time of 8:14.56 representing Division III's best performance in the 2018-19 season. Morgan posted the time at the NYC Armory Track on January 12, as he took the 2019 TCNJ Lions Indoor Invitational event win. Joshua Schraeder of Wisconsin-La Crosse (8:14.56), Aidan Ryan of Williams (8:15.15), Sam Brunenette of Plymouth State (8:16.84), Nolan McKenna (8:16.89) and Dhruvil Patel of North Central (8:16.91) figure to be Morgan's main challengers for the national championship.
Morgan also owns the top time in the indoor mile, an event in which he was named All-America a season ago following a fifth place finish at nationals in Birmingham, Ala. Morgan will forgo competing in that event in 2019 to focus on the 3,000 meters.
