HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford men's cross country senior co-captain Sam McCalpin has been named the Centennial Conference Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced in its seasonal academic awards release on Tuesday morning. The Centennial Conference recognizes a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of its 24 championship sports, awarding the honor to a junior or senior member of the All-Conference team with the highest cumulative grade point average.

McCalpin was named second-team All-Centennial Conference after a 10th place finish at the conference championships earlier this month in Gettysburg. McCalpin, a Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selection a season ago, is a three-time qualifier to the NCAA Championship as well as a three-time All-Mideast Region selection. McCalpin has also been a member of the Centennial Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll and the USTFCCCA All-Academic Selection in each season of eligibility for those respective awards.

The chemistry major capped a standout cross country career in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, representing Haverford at the NCAA Division III Championships for the third time and scoring for the Fords with a 215th place overall finish. Haverford finished 27th overall in its 27th consecutive trip to the national championship.

McCalpin is the third member of the Haverford Men's Cross Country program to garner the Scholar Athlete of the Year award, joining former teammate Graham Peet '19 and Chris Stadler '14 in taking home the plaudit.

Haverford will now turn its full attention to the indoor season. The men's indoor track & field team gets its campaign underway with the Haverford Holiday Meet on Saturday, December 7. Events are slated to get underway at 10:30 a.m. inside the Alumni Field House.
