Eight is Great as Women's Basketball Notches Senior Day Victory over McDaniel, 67-37

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's basketball team (15-5, 11-4 CC) feted its senior class with a wire-to-wire 67-37 victory over visiting McDaniel (4-14, 2-11 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Gooding Arena. The Fords have won eight straight contests, the program's longest winning streak since the 2019-20 season, when the eventual Centennial Conference champions rattled off a program-record 11 consecutive victories.

Prior to the contest, Haverford honored a trio of seniors in Caroline Andersen, Fiona Flynn, and Lauren Howard for their contributions to what has become the finest era in the history of the women's basketball program. The Class of 2022 has amassed 60 victories over just 17 losses in their tenure on campus.

Haverford built its lead with a strong defensive showing in the first half, holding the Green Terror without a field goal in the second period, while stalwarts Ally Landau (19 points) and Kayla Robinson (14 points) helped pave the way on the offensive end. Cortlyn Morris was a force with 12 rebounds and four blocks.  After tip-off on a snowy day, Haverford built a 9-6 advantage with 7:03 to go in the first quarter, and eventually that lead ballooned to 40-11 with a monster 31-5 run heading into halftime. Robinson and Landau helped key the stretch that also saw Zoe Carlson and Erin Albright make key contributions offensively.

The swarming defensive presence nearly eliminated all perimeter options for the visitors, while McDaniel mustered just a 25.9 clip overall in the matinee. Haverford forced 19 turnovers in the contest, and held McDaniel to just three total field goals in the first half of play. The nation's second-ranked defense again proved to be up to the task, holding the opposition to under 40 points for the third consecutive game and the fifth time this season.

As the second half began, the Fords kept up the offensive momentum from the first 20 minutes, with a Landau layup putting a bow on another big offensive spurt and making the score 44-18 with 5:17 to go. Gia Flamini then connected a runner with 49 seconds remaining in the third, extending the lead to 51-26 as the Fords entered the final quarter with a fired up bench and all the momentum firmly on their side. The lead hit its apex of 34 with just under two minutes to play, as the Fords had 10 different scorers on the afternoon with a group of younger players able to see significant action in a conference contest.

Meggie Burgess was a force for McDaniel, tallying a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She was the only Green Terror player to tally in double digits in any category on the afternoon.

Women's Basketball has now won six consecutive contests with McDaniel. The Fords next return to action on Wednesday, February 2, heading to Bi-Co neighbor Bryn Mawr for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The contest serves as prelude to next Saturday's showdown in Baltimore against Johns Hopkins. That contest will tipoff at 3 p.m. at Goldfarb Gymnasium.
