Haverford College Interim Director of Athletics Michael Vienna has announced the hiring of Stephanie Carideo as head women’s basketball coach. Carideo joins the staff at Haverford after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Pennsylvania. 

During her tenure at Penn, Carideo was instrumental in mentoring the guards, with Kayla Padilla earning Ivy League Rookie of the Year and First-team All-Ivy as the Quakers finished 20-7 overall, posting a mark of 10-4 in conference while earning the second seed in the Ivy League Tournament in 2019-20.  

Prior to her two seasons at Penn, Carideo was an assistant coach for the men’s program at Jefferson, becoming one of only two female coaches on staff for a men’s program throughout all levels of NCAA basketball. Working alongside Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Head Coach Herb Magee, Carideo helped lead the Rams to the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference regular season championship in 2018-19. 

Carideo began her collegiate coaching career as head coach of the women’s team at Penn State Abington for two seasons, earning NEAC Coach of the Year honors in 2015 after her Nittany Lions set a program record with a 22-5 record, advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. 

Her start in coaching came as head coach at John. W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School in Philadelphia, where she spent a season at the helm of the squad with a focus on scouting, recruiting and player development along with fundraising and community relations efforts. 

A standout at Jefferson (formerly Philadelphia University), Carideo picked up All-Conference designation as a senior and finished her collegiate career with 1,078 points, 405 rebounds, 400 assists, and 223 steals. She is a member of Cape May Athletic Hall of Fame, earning induction in 2012 after her tenure at Lower Cape May High School, where she graduated in 2007. 

Carideo earned her bachelor's degree in psychology in 2011 and master's degree in business administration in 2012 from Philadelphia University. She and her husband, Chris, the head men's basketball coach at Widener University, have two sons, Christopher Jr. and Carson.
